And this might sound really ridiculous to modern ears – but it’s only the Christian that’s truly free. It’s not like we’re just saying ‘Oh Christians can be free too.” No. It’s only by God’s grace to choose the good that a human being can be free – at all – in the relevant sense. It’s a… a change of mindset from what you’d hear nowadays. Our faith gives us freedom. I think we can all relate to this on some level where – if you have, or ever been stuck in a sin, or a sinful attachment, where you can’t rid yourself of a temptation or your struck with serious guilt after a sin, or a feeling of being… ah… imprisoned by a sin. You can understand why in Scriptures – especially St. Paul – talks about being slaves to sin. It’s this opposition of freedom in Christ, slavery in sin. I think we can all relate to that. This feeling of ‘I can’t actually do what I know and want to do. I’m actually trapped. My will doesn’t work the way I ought – the way it ought to work. … I can kinda see what I need to do but I just can’t get to it.’
