We struggle over a bag of M&M’s, that I gave up in the morning and by the afternoon have somehow half disappeared. If this is the hold in my heart, that over little chocolates… or a hamburger, or a simple offering of surrender of comfort. My heart struggles, and strains. We should know that this will not go easy. And that the territory that has been seeded to the enemy will not be given up lightly.

Gospel: Mt 20: 1-16 (The Parable of the Vineyard)

We tend to think of the life of grace like that at times. To suppose ‘well there are the rules, and if you don’t play by the rules you shouldn’t get the reward.’ In a sense because – I think we look at it as though: “if I obey the law of God, I have surrendered something that probably would have made me happy and I would have enjoyed doing. We have to give up all the fun stuff to be good and be holy. And so those people who didn’t give up the fun stuff and got away with something shouldn’t get the reward. While the rest of us have suffered and shouldn’t the world all know about it.”

…that the joy of the Gospel should be contagious from those who have it. This is the Kingdom of God. That the ruler of heaven and earth has chosen to dwell in me and make His dominion in my heart. And that in you and me the world might see Him at work and marvel at what He was wrought.
